Is Your iPod Annoying You? How to Handle Those Crazy iPod Cords

The iPod is a fantastic device, but what about those crazy iPod cords? The cords for my earbuds are always a bit too long, but shortening them was a dilemma that I just couldn't figure out. You definitely can't cut them, and you certainly don't need to tie them up and risk damaging the sensitive wires inside. I looked for earbuds with shorter cords, but never could find exactly what I needed.

Then I discovered the secret. It was as simple as...well, as my grandmother's crochet.

To tame your iPod cords, why not try a simple crochet stitch? It doesn't just work for fabrics and threads! The crochet stitch can be used to shorten your iPod cords safely and effectively, without the risk of damage to the tiny wires inside that white insulation.

First, make a regular knot in your cord. Do this close to the end of the plug, where the iPod cord enters the earbud jack. Don't pull the earbuds through the knot, and don't make the knot tight - it needs to be loose to accommodate the rest of the knots you're going to make.

Now, make a short loop in the remaining cord, close to the original knot. Gently pull that loop through the knot. There should be plenty of room to move your fingers - don't let it get too tight! Next, using two fingers, reach through the loop you just made and grab the cord. Pulling on that cord, make another short loop.

Repeat this motion over and over, until you've reached the end of your cord. It might take a few tries to get it right. After all, it's a crochet loop you're doing, and no one ever just picked up a thread and began to crochet without any instruction or mistakes! Just always be sure to keep the loops large enough that you can reach into them with two fingers. This also insures that the cord never gets too tight, and never cuts off the vital wires inside.

At the final loop of the chain, slip the earbuds through. This will seal off the chain. And then you're done! The iPod cord will be short enough that you can wear it with ease and not worry about getting it tangled up. Give it a try, and if the line is too short, simply let out one of the loops to make it longer. Just be sure not to pull on the chain too hard, because if you do, the loops might tighten up, and you will have to undo it all and go through the process again. Work with it until it's adjusted to your liking, and that's it! You're done!

This method works well for other cords too, not just iPod cords. If you have cords that keep getting in your way and nothing seems to tame them, try the crochet loop and see what happens. It's a great way to keep your cords organized and make your life a little easier!
